When to Swap Your Tires for Winter

Temperature matters more than the calendar

Winter tires are not really about snow, they are about temperature. The rubber compound in a winter tire stays flexible below about 7 degrees Celsius, while all-season and summer tires start to stiffen and lose grip in that same range, even on dry pavement. In Fredericton, that threshold usually arrives well before the first real snowfall.

Why the "first snow" rush is the worst time to book

Once the first snow actually falls, every tire shop in the area gets the same wave of calls at once, which usually means a longer wait for an appointment and, if you are unlucky, a day or two of driving on tires that are no longer doing their job. Booking a few weeks earlier avoids all of that entirely.

What a seasonal swap actually involves

Our mobile technicians come to your driveway or workplace parking lot, swap your winter set on, and check tread depth and pressure on all four tires as part of the same visit. There is no shop waiting room and no half day off work, and if you need somewhere to keep your off-season set, we can store it until spring.

A quick way to check your own tires

If you are not sure whether this season's tires still have enough life left, look at the tread depth: a toonie inserted into the tread groove should not show more than the silver rim if there is still adequate tread remaining. If the tread is visibly worn or the rubber feels hard and cracked, that is worth mentioning when you book.

Booking ahead

The best time to book a winter swap is once overnight temperatures start dipping toward freezing on a regular basis, typically weeks before the first snow is expected. Reach out through our contact form or give us a call to find a time that works before the seasonal rush begins.
